Who we are

I hear people say all the time things like I am Catholic or I am Baptist or I am Presbyterian.  When I ask back, “What does that mean?” there is very rarely much of an answer.  So, “Who are the people of SCC?” seems like a fair question.

We are just people who love God.  We are just people who accept Christ as our Lord and Savior.  But what about the tougher questions? Denominations, beliefs, doctrines… Ok here goes…

What denomination is SCC?

Actually, we are not a denomination.  SCC is an Independent Christian Church.  We don’t believe ourselves to be the only Christians, but we are Christian only.  Our movement is called the Restoration Movement which began in the early 1800’s with a goal of “restoring” the church of the Bible.  Christian churches boast the largest church in America (Southeast Christian Church, Louisville, KY).  Hey, that’s not too far from here!

Who leads your church?

Ok, first and foremost, Jesus leads our church.  I know, I know , that’s not what you meant.  We are lead by Elders., not one “Pastor”.  We feel it is dangerous and unbiblical to place the leadership of the church into the hands of just one man—any man.  The Bible consistently shows the church to be led by a plurality of men called elders.  They work in conjunction with the staff members of the church to provide a stable leadership that overlooks the health of the entire congregation.   When calling men to be elders, we intentionally look for individuals who have leadership skills, a positive, encouraging attitude, who have a desire and are seeking ministry, not power.

What makes your church different from any other church?

We are happy, friendly and loving, most of the time.  Sometimes we are grumpy, unfriendly, and difficult.  Some of us are still learning while others think they know it all.  We are diverse because we all come from different backgrounds and are all at different stages in our spiritual growth.  We really don’t know everything and make our fair share of mistakes.  We don’t even always treat each other as we should.  I guess that means in a lot of ways, we are just like everyone else., but we love one another.  You wont get lost in the crowd with us. You wont be forgotten or left out.  We pull together as a family especially when times are tough.  We look out for one another and provide for one another.  Through it all we just hope God uses us to make a difference in this world.  We hope to change lives, starting with our own.

How can I get involved?

I am so glad you asked!  We aren’t so laid back that we will let you run the church your first Sunday visiting, but we also aren’t going to make you have a Master’s Degree to help out.  It’s like this; if you want to help, join in.  God has given us all talents and gifts.  You may have an interest or a hobby that gives you a unique perspective and experience that others don’t have.  Our Minister preaches because that is his gift, but don’t ask him to fix your car.  It would be bad.  What are your gifts and how could you use those gifts as your own personal ministry?  Any person, given enough time and inclination can accomplish anything. Just remember, Christ served to set the example for us, so don’t just sit there, lets get to work.
